Our Stay In Bariloche, Argentina

After spending a few days in Buenos Aires researching everything we could do in Bariloche we’d decided on the following: mountain biking, a few hikes, and of course eating our way through the quaint town. Hopping onto the flight, we felt ready to get the most out of our time in the Patagonian town of Bariloche.

However, when we landed with our minds set on summer activities, we were hit with the realization that it was still shoulder season, and in fact spring skiing was in its prime. We quickly started researching skiing in the area and reached out to some friends who had previously spent time there. After lining up some ski days and getting pumped to get back on the hill, I was unfortunately hit with a nasty sickness, leading to spending our entire 5 days in Bariloche alternating between the bed and the bathroom. Although we didn’t get to see much of this beautiful town, Patagonia is definitely on our list of places to return too.

Llao Llao:
Although we aren’t much of the sightseeing and ritzy tourists, we ended up exploring Llao Llao the day we flew out of Bariloche. I was still feeling super sick this last day, so we pretended to be guests of the hotel and sat in the reading room and slept on the couches - It was the perfect place to recover!

Exploring Downtown:
Bariloche is a German inspired town, with lots of shops and markets scattered throughout. We spent the mornings walking along the water and checking out local meat and cheese shops that also had the BEST homemade empanadas.

7 Lakes Drive:
7 alpine lakes settled in the Patagonian mountains, that you can reach and explore in just one-day! Although we only hit 5, this was such a great way to explore the mountains, especially when sick, and check out the quaint towns along the way.

Our Favorites

If you are headed to Bariloche, this airbnb is absolutely stunning. Located a walking distance away from downtown, right on the lake with a beautiful view, and floor to ceiling windows letting in plenty of natural light, this was the perfect place to be holed up for a week. Not only did we have amazing lake views, we also got a perfect view of the most colorful and diverse sunsets we’ve ever seen.

Where We Stayed

Restaurante Punto Panoramico:  Great spot for lunch on a sunny day. This was one of the first meals I could eat again, and it was an amazing view to catch some afternoon rays and drink a cup of coffee!

La Marmite: Great fondue restaurant downtown bariloche

The Food

Stag: Beautiful view and fantastic meat. Although on the pricier side

The Other Stuff

Once again we rented a car in Mendoza, which was by far the best option for us as it keeps you away from tour buses or organized tours! We rented it through a local blue-book company called (Auka Rental - make sure and search online as the local rental agencies are 1/3 the price of the big boys).

Transportation

Currency

As with everywhere in Argentina, having cash here is extremely important. The easiest way to get cash in Bariloche is to use Western Unions, which are located in multiple locations in the town. The Western Union App is the best way to find the locations, but beware the opening times are not always correct. If you are stopping in Buenos Aires prior, there are many more options there and I would suggest getting enough cash to make it through your time in Bariloche

There are plenty of grocery stores in town but we found some great little markets with fresh meats, cheeses, fruits, and empanadas for that mid-day snack!

La Pata Negra - meat and cheese shop
Lider Market - Fruit and veggie shop
